Kochel am See es un municipio en el distrito de Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, en Alta Baviera. La localidad que lleva el mismo nombre es la sede de la comunidad administrativa Kochel am See. El municipio incluye alrededor del 70 por ciento de la superficie del lago Kochel y todo el lago Walchen.
Se considera que el primer asentamiento conocido en la zona de Kochel es la fortificación en la "Gran y Pequeña Birg", estos dos poderosos bloques de roca cerca de Altjoch en la costa sur del lago Kochel y al pie de la carretera Kesselberg. Proviene de la época de los campos de urnas y se data en torno al año 1200 a.C. Durante la época del Imperio Romano, el área pertenecía a la provincia de Raetia. En el año 739 se establecieron el monasterio de Benediktbeuern y el monasterio de Kochel am See. El monasterio de mujeres de Kochel fue destruido en 908 por los húngaros.
