El barrio fue oficialmente conocido como Leithe antes de su incorporación a Wattenscheid el 1 de abril de 1926, y en documentos a menudo también se le denomina Leithe Westfalia. Una parte de la comunidad disuelta fue reubicada en Gelsenkirchen. Con la incorporación de Wattenscheid, Leithe pasó a ser parte de Bochum el 1 de enero de 1975. El Leithe renano se encuentra al otro lado del arroyo Leither.
