El antiguo núcleo del pueblo de Donsbrüggen se encuentra en el borde de la Düffel, alrededor de la iglesia de San Lambertus. En dirección a Kleve y Materborn, al sur de la carretera federal 9, comienzan las cadenas montañosas del bosque imperial de Kleve.
Los orígenes de Donsbrüggen datan de la temprana Edad Media franca; 100 m al suroeste de la iglesia se encontraron tumbas del siglo VI. Pertenecía a Hattuarien en la parte franca del reino de Austrasia. En 721/22, el conde franco Ebroin, hijo de Oda, otorgó a la iglesia en Rindern, que entonces estaba bajo la dirección del misionero anglosajón y obispo Willibrord, propiedades en Donsbrüggen, más concretamente, tierras forestales en "Dangaes-broch", que se extendían hasta Mehr y Rindern; más tarde, la abadía de Echternach, fundada por Willibrord, y la abadía carolingia de San Quintín también tenían propiedades aquí.
