El Eselsbach nace en el noroeste del Bosque de Palatinate, en el borde occidental de Enkenbach-Alsenborn, a una altitud de 304 m sobre el nivel del mar. Desde aquí, el arroyo fluye predominantemente hacia el oeste y desemboca en el noroeste de Kaiserslautern, a 226 m en la orilla derecha del Lauter.
Después de su recorrido de 12,3 km, el Eselsbach desemboca 78 metros más abajo, lo que corresponde a una pendiente media del lecho de 6,3 ‰. Desagua una cuenca de 27,888 km² a través de Lauter, Glan, Nahe y Rin hacia el Mar del Norte.
