La autopista federal 44 – abreviada: autopista 44 – se extiende desde la frontera entre Alemania y Bélgica en Renania del Norte-Westfalia hasta el noreste de Hesse. Se está construyendo una prolongación hasta la frontera estatal de Turingia.
La autopista consta de un tramo occidental que va de Aquisgrán a través de Mönchengladbach y Düsseldorf hasta Essen, así como de un tramo oriental que va de Dortmund a través de Kassel hasta Waldkappel. La trayectoria de la A 44 está interrumpida en muchos lugares, y se espera que parte de las lagunas se cierre en los próximos años. Un tramo medio originalmente previsto de Velbert a través de Bochum hasta Dortmund ya no está planeado.
