El Plane es un afluente de la Havel en Brandeburgo, de aproximadamente 61 km de largo. Su cuenca tiene una superficie de 639 km². Es el más grande de los cuatro importantes cursos de agua naturales en el lado norte del Alto Fläming, que incluyen además del Plane su afluente Temnitz, el Buckau y el Verlorenwasser.
Según Sophie Wauer, el nombre Plane proviene del antiguo polabo plony y designa un río que fluye en la llanura. Plony se refiere a un terreno llano, plano y estéril. Los eslavos autóctonos estaban asentados en el distrito de Ploni. El pueblo de Planow, ubicado al oeste del curso del río entre Reckahn y Göttin, fue nombrado así por el río, y se menciona por primera vez en un documento de donación del margrave Otto el Largo a la ciudad nueva en 1297, y ya se describe como deshabitado en el libro de tierras de Carlos IV de 1375.
