La ruina del castillo de Reifferscheid se encuentra a una altura de 450 m sobre el nivel del mar, cerca de la frontera entre Alemania y Bélgica, entre Eifel y Ardennes, en el municipio de Hellenthal, que forma parte del distrito de Euskirchen en Renania del Norte-Westfalia, en el barrio de Reifferscheid. Su nombre probablemente se deriva de una zona de desmonte que pertenecía a un hombre llamado Rifhari, ya que los nombres "Rifersceith" o "Rifheres-sceit" significan "parte del bosque de Rifhari".
