El Tief se forma por la confluencia del Friedeburger Tief y del Neustädter Tief, aproximadamente a 2,7 km al sureste de Neustadtgödens. Inicialmente, fluye en dirección sureste, pasa por debajo de la A 29, la L 815, la línea de tren Oldenburg–Wilhelmshaven y, en Ellenserdammersiel, la Grodenstraße. Después, el Tief toma un recorrido oriental curvado, que se creó entre 1993 y 2001 por la extracción de arcilla. Los lagos de extracción que surgieron pertenecen desde 2011 al área de protección paisajística "Marschen am Jadebusen–West". Desde febrero de 2019, el Ellenserdammer Tief y los lagos de extracción se encuentran en el área de protección paisajística "Teichfledermausgewässer", designada para la salvaguarda del área de hábitats FFH "Hábitats de murciélagos de estanque en el área de Wilhelmshaven".
