El pueblo está situado a unos cinco kilómetros al sur de Betzenstein y se encuentra a una altura de 529 m sobre el nivel del mar.
La designación original de Riegelstein era Raupersdorf. Hans I. el Türrigel inició la construcción del castillo de Riegelstein. Sus hijos se denominaban en 1403 por primera vez "Tyrrigel zum Riegelstein", también Türriegel o Dürriegel. De este modo, el pueblo recibió el nombre de: "Riegelstein". Los Türriegel eran ministeriales de los Schenken de Reicheneck y se separaron de los Schenken con una extensa propiedad alrededor de Riegelstein. Desde 1403 eran alodiales. Alrededor del año 1500, Heinrich VI. no solo era caballero de torneos en Ingolstadt, Bamberg y Würzburg, sino que también era profesionalmente encargado en los castillos de Stierberg y Betzenstein.
