La aldea situada al norte de Pegnitz-Kuppenalb es una de las 23 localidades oficialmente nombradas del municipio de Betzenstein, ubicado en Alta Franconia. Se encuentra aproximadamente a cinco kilómetros al sur-suroeste de Betzenstein y está a una altitud de 556 m sobre el nivel del mar.
A principios del siglo XIX, debido a las reformas administrativas realizadas en el Reino de Baviera, la localidad se convirtió en un municipio rural independiente, que incluía también el pueblo de Riegelstein como sede del municipio, las aldeas de Eichenstruth e Illafeld, así como la aldea aislada de Eibenthal. Más tarde se añadió la aldea de Schermshöhe, que se formó en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. En el marco de la reforma municipal de los años 70 en Baviera, el municipio completo de Spies fue incorporado a la ciudad de Betzenstein el 1 de enero de 1972. En 1987, Spies contaba con 145 habitantes.
