El Consejo Nacional de Defensa fue un organismo que asumió el papel de gobierno provisional en lo que quedaba de la República Española tras el golpe militar protagonizado por el coronel Casado contra el Gobierno de Negrín.
Mediante este golpe, que tuvo lugar en Madrid, el 5 de marzo de 1939, se pretendió poner fin a la guerra civil mediante un acuerdo entre militares, que limitara las anunciadas represalias de los vencedores del bando sublevado encabezado por el general Franco y evitar el intento del gobierno de Negrín, apoyado por el Partido Comunista de España y un sector del Partido Socialista Obrero Español, de prolongar el conflicto hasta enlazarlo con la inmediata conflagración europea; única posibilidad, a su juicio, de pervivencia de la Segunda República Española.
