El antiguo municipio de Sort era un término municipal de la comarca del Pallars Sobirà que fue ampliado en 1970 y 1976 con los antiguos municipios de Altron, Enviny y Llessui.
El municipio de Sort fue creado en 1812 a partir de las disposiciones de la Constitución de Cádiz y se ha mantenido siempre, de primero con la superficie original, y, a partir de 1970 y 1976, considerablemente ampliado. También fueron creados en 1812 el ayuntamiento de La Bastida de Sort, incorporado a Sort en 1847. También comprendía los pueblos de Bressui y de Pernui, el último actualmente del todo despoblado, y un despoblado muy antiguo, que la tradición asocia con el origen de Sort: la villa de Vilamflor.
