Los Cévennes son una cadena montañosa que forma parte del Macizo Central. El punto más alto es el Mont Lozère (1702m). Su terreno montañoso tuvo un efecto en la historia. Los Cévennes tenían una alta concentración de hugonotes (protestantes) porque podían esconderse aquí en los Cévennes en el siglo XVII. A principios del siglo XVIII, esta población, apodada los camisardos, se levantó contra la monarquía. Esos eventos no son ajenos al paisaje de lugares fáciles de esconderse.
