Metzeral, el pueblo más antiguo de la Grande Vallée, con 1.109 habitantes, tiene una rica historia. Mencionado por primera vez en el año 817, su nombre deriva probablemente de la palabra latina "pequeño muro de piedra seca". El pueblo se independizó en 1801 y prosperó en el siglo XIX gracias a la industria textil. Víctima de la Primera Guerra Mundial, Metzeral es hoy un centro turístico, en particular con su planta embotelladora de agua de manantial "Valon". La iglesia del Emm, construida en homenaje a los muertos de la guerra de 1914-18, es un lugar de peregrinación. El cementerio militar de Chêne Millet recuerda los estragos de la guerra. La región ofrece numerosos paseos por lugares emblemáticos.
