El lugar donde se construyó la Ópera Garnier era extremadamente húmedo. A pesar de ocho bombas, no podían secar el terreno. Por ello, el arquitecto Garnier construyó un cisterna de hormigón donde se recogía el agua. Así nació la leyenda de que la ópera había sido construida sobre un lago subterráneo. Esa historia también fue utilizada en El Fantasma de la Ópera, el relato de Gaston Leroux. También hay una leyenda que dice que aquí se criaban truchas en ese lago.
