La Tercera República francesa fue el régimen republicano en vigor en Francia de 1870 a 1940. Fue el primer régimen francés duradero desde la caída del Antiguo Régimen en 1789. En efecto, Francia había experimentado, en ochenta años, siete regímenes políticos: tres monarquías constitucionales, dos repúblicas efímeras y dos imperios. Estas dificultades contribuyen a explicar la indecisión de la Asamblea Nacional, la cual demoró nueve años, de 1870 a 1879, para renunciar a la monarquía y proponer una tercera constitución republicana.
