Wakefield es el centro administrativo y principal población del distrito metropolitano de Ciudad de Wakefield, en el condado de West Yorkshire . Según el censo de 2011, tenía una población de 99.251 habitantes. Zona minera por excelencia, entró en depresión por el cierre de las minas a finales de la década de 1970. Tiene una gran catedral. El 30 de diciembre de 1460 tuvo lugar la Batalla de Wakefield, durante las Guerras de las Dos Rosas, en la cual las tropas de Ricardo de York fueron aplastadas por las tropas de la casa de Lancaster. En las proximidades se encuentran las históricas ruinas del Castillo de Sandal.
