La mayoría de las rocas y suelos que tienen en Naxos no son tan buenos para captar y almacenar agua. Las rocas cristalinas (esquistos, gneises, migmatita, granodiorita y mármoles) que componen la mayor parte de Naxos tienen una baja permeabilidad primaria; la capacidad de transmitir agua a través de ellas depende de una fractura y/o permeabilidad secundaria inducida por disolución. El principal parámetro que controla el régimen de flujo de aguas subterráneas en acuíferos fracturados, como las rocas cristalinas, es el patrón de fractura.
