La cabeza decapitada de San Juan Bautista juega un papel importante en su martirio. Según la tradición, Juan Bautista fue encarcelado y decapitado por orden del rey Herodes Antipas, después de que Salomé, la hija de Herodías, a instancias de su madre, pidiera la cabeza en una bandeja como recompensa por su baile. La cabeza fue entregada a Salomé, quien se la dio a su madre. Los discípulos de Juan más tarde recuperaron el cuerpo y lo enterraron. Esta cabeza simboliza el martirio y se conmemora anualmente el 29 de agosto tanto en las tradiciones católicas como en las ortodoxas.
