En 1986 se convocó un concurso para una escultura al aire libre con motivo del 200 aniversario de la ciudad de Reikiavik. "Zon Voyager" de Jón Gunnar ganó el concurso, y el modelo de aluminio (42,5 x 88 x 36 cm) se presentó a la ciudad para su ejecución. El Zon Voyager a tamaño completo fue finalmente inaugurado en Sæbraut en el aniversario de la ciudad de Reikiavik, el 18 de agosto de 1990.
La obra está hecha de acero inoxidable y se encuentra sobre un círculo de placas de granito, rodeada por el llamado "hormigón del Ayuntamiento". Se construyó de acuerdo con el dibujo a gran escala de Sun Voyager de Jón Gunnar y fue supervisada por el asistente de Jón Gunnar, el artista Kristinn E. Hrafnsson. La técnica de la escultura fue guiada por el tecnólogo Sigurjón Yngvason, en estrecha colaboración con el propio Jón Gunnar.
