La basílica de San Petronio tiene un reloj de sol en forma de línea meridiana incrustada en el pavimento del pasillo izquierdo. Esto data de 1655. Fue calculado y diseñado por el famoso astrónomo Giovanni Domenico Cassini, quien enseñó astronomía en la Universidad. Con sus 66,8 metros, este es el reloj de sol más largo del mundo. La basílica de San Petronio es la iglesia más importante de Bolonia. Es la quinta iglesia más grande del mundo: 132 metros de largo y 60 de ancho, con la bóveda a 45 metros en el interior y 51 metros en la fachada. Puede albergar aproximadamente a 28,000 personas. La primera piedra de la construcción fue colocada el 7 de junio de 1390.
