El nombre es 'Castello Estense' (Castillo de los Estes), pero desde 1598 la famosa dinastía Este ha sido expulsada de Ferrara por los Estados Pontificios. Cuando la reina Cristina de Suecia visitó la ciudad en noviembre de 1655, fue recibida por el cardenal legado Alderano Cybo.
