El ducado de Urbino fue anexado como provincia del Estado Pontificio tras la muerte del último duque Francisco María II della Rovere en 1625. Como resultado, el Palacio Ducal de Pesaro fue la residencia del cardenal legado Luigi Homodei en 1655. Recibió la Reina Cristina de Suecia durante su viaje a Roma. Hoy el palacio se utiliza como ayuntamiento principal.
