La iglesia, cuyo claustro perteneció primero a los monjes benedictinos y desde el siglo XII a los monjes camaldulenses, fue construida hacia 1016 y reformada varias veces, sobre todo después de los bombardeos aéreos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. La fachada exterior, que se salvó del bombardeo, data de los siglos XIII-XIV, mientras que el interior data de los siglos XI-XII y ha sido muy modificado.
El monumental interior, que ha sido ampliamente renovado, tiene tres naves y ocho tramos y está cubierto con cerchas en la nave central.
En el interior hay un crucifijo de mármol, atribuido a Nino Pisano (siglo XIV). El altar mayor de mármol policromado del siglo XVIII representa a la Virgen con el Niño y los Santos.
