El 1 de enero de 1997 se formó el municipio de Steenbergen, a partir de la fusión de los municipios de Dinteloord, Prinsenland, Nieuw-Vossemeer y Steenbergen. Con las aldeas de Kruisland y De Heen que ya pertenecen a Steenbergen, el nuevo municipio abarca por lo tanto 5 núcleos, cada uno con su propio carácter.
El municipio tiene más de 23,000 habitantes y una superficie de aproximadamente 16,000 ha. Un municipio de origen agrícola con un carácter industrial y comercial en los núcleos de Steenbergen y Dinteloord.
