En 1360 se escribe por primera vez sobre una mansión Drakesteyn. La antigua historia de Drakensteyn está estrechamente vinculada a la de la mansión de caballeros Drakenburg, que se encontraba cerca y fue demolida en el siglo XIX.
Durante el Siglo de Oro, se reformaron y construyeron un gran número de castillos y casas de campo en la Laagte de Pijnenburg, como Soestdijk - el posterior Palacio Soestdijk -, Castillo De Hooge Vuursche, De Eult, Pijnenburg, Eeuwijckshoeve.
En 1780 se lleva a cabo una reforma que cambia la apariencia de la casa: se eliminan las columnas jónicas. En 1807 Drakensteyn pasa a ser propiedad del sr. Paulus Wilhelmus Bosch, alcalde de Utrecht. La casa permanece en la familia durante 150 años, hasta que en 1959 Frederik Lodewijk Bosch de Drakestein la vende a la Princesa Beatriz. Ella manda restaurar el castillo y se muda a él en 1963. Después de convertirse en reina, se traslada a La Haya en 1981. Desde entonces, Drakensteyn ha sido utilizado como residencia de campo y alojamiento para invitados.
La propiedad y la vivienda no están abiertas a la visita.
