Heerenveen es la capital del municipio homónimo de Heerenveen en la provincia de Frisia, al norte de los Países Bajos.
Heerenveen es la población más antigua en el canal de Heeresloot, por el que se extraía la turba, fundada en 1551 por tres señores que fundaron una compañía con el objetivo de adquirir la mayor cantidad de tierras ricas en turba, de donde le viene el nombre . Heerenveen es una de las mayores poblaciones de Frisia por el número de habitantes, pero se encuentra entre las once ciudades tradicionales, por no haber recibido carta de población.
