Se encuentra al norte de la ciudad de Leeuwarden, entre Stiens y Hijum, con los que colabora mucho. A través del área del pueblo fluye el Finkumervaart, que también tiene un puerto para embarcaciones de paso. En 2021, el pueblo contaba con 160 habitantes. También forma parte del pueblo la aldea de Poelhuizen. Finkum se formó como un terp de vivienda alrededor de la era cristiana. Este terp fue levantado sobre un terraplén de marisma. La expansión de un terp de vivienda a pueblo probablemente se deba a una residencia de verano del monasterio Mariëngaarde en Hallum. El monasterio poseía muchas tierras en la zona. Cuando el monasterio perdió el poder en 1580, cuatro familias nobles las tomaron.
