El Boven-Merwede forma el tramo superior del río Merwede y la continuación del Waal en los Países Bajos occidentales. Comienza en el castillo de Loevestein, donde el Waal y el Maas solían unirse y donde se encuentra la frontera histórica entre Gelre y Holanda. En el Boven-Merwede confluyen las fronteras de South Holland, North Brabant y Gelderland. El río pierde en Werkendam y Boven-Hardinxveld la mayor parte de su agua hacia el Nieuwe Merwede y a partir de ese punto se llama Beneden-Merwede. La longitud total del Boven-Merwede es de 8,8 kilómetros. El río es una parte importante de la ruta de navegación entre Rotterdam y Amberes, por un lado, y Alemania, por otro.
