En 1850 se concedió permiso por orden real del Rey Guillermo III para excavar este canal. En 1851 comenzaron con esta gran tarea. 532 trabajadores trabajaron en este inmenso proyecto. Ganaban 15 centavos por cada cúbico de tierra excavada. La tierra se utilizó para el dique del canal. El 12 de junio de 1855 se inauguró la sección Hancate-Almelo y el 7 de septiembre la sección Dalmsholte-Deventer.
Hasta aproximadamente 1956, los barcos navegaban por el canal con remolachas, turba, arena y fertilizantes. Actualmente, el canal se utiliza para la entrada y salida de agua.
