Este interesante museo cuenta la historia de 200 años de cultivo y orden en los Países Bajos. La aldea carcelaria se creó por iniciativa de Johannes van den Bosch. Su objetivo era combatir la pobreza dándole a las personas en las colonias de caridad una nueva oportunidad. El buen comportamiento y el máximo esfuerzo eran importantes, y para dejarlo claro había disciplina y castigos. Lo que eso significaba y cómo se desarrolló el proyecto a lo largo de los años se puede ver aquí en esta antigua prisión.
Veenhuizen ha sido incluido como parte de las colonias de caridad en la lista del Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO. La representación teatral 'Het Pauperparadijs' se llevó a cabo en el patio del museo.
