Con picos cercanos como Dhaulagiri (8167 m) y Annapurna (8091 m) , este desfiladero es el más profundo del mundo cuando la profundidad de un desfiladero se mide por la diferencia entre la altura del río y la altura de los picos más altos en ambos lados. .
Es uno de los principales ríos de Nepal y un afluente del Ganges en la India.
La fuente de Kali Gandaki se encuentra en la frontera con el Tíbet a una altura de 6.268 metros sobre el glaciar Nhubine Himal en Mustang. Se dice que la cuenca del río Gandaki contiene 1025 glaciares y 338 lagos.
