El pueblo de Matmata está a unos 40 km de Gabes, una ciudad importante cerca de la costa. Gabes es conocida por su inusual oasis costero. Matmata se encuentra a una altitud de 600 m. Este lugar extraordinario es conocido por sus viviendas trogloditas. La roca blanda en esta área es ideal para excavar. Se excavaron más de 700 viviendas en el suelo. El hotel Sidi Driss en Matmata fue el lugar de filmación de la película de Georges Lucas: Star Wars. Este lugar era el 'hogar' de la familia Lars, la familia anfitriona de Luke Skywalker y Beru. Los asentamientos subterráneos permanecieron ocultos en esta área muy hostil durante siglos, y nadie tenía conocimiento de su existencia hasta 1967. El nombre Matmata es el nombre de la tribu nómada de Marruecos. Se dice que fundaron la ciudad de Hamma Matmata, ahora conocida como El Hamma.
