El Acuario de la bahía de Monterey fue fundado en 1984[1] y se encuentra en el lugar donde antes existía una antigua fábrica de conservas de sardina en Cannery Row en la costa del Océano Pacífico en la ciudad de Monterey, en California[2] al oeste de los Estados Unidos. Cuenta con una asistencia anual de 1,8 millones de visitantes. Contiene miles de plantas y animales, que representan a 623 especies distintas en exhibición. El acuario se beneficia por una alta circulación de agua fresca del océano, que se obtiene a través de tubos que bombean en forma continua desde la bahía de Monterey.
