Obsteig est la commune la plus occidentale du plateau de Mieminger, au-dessus de la vallée d'Oberinntal, au pied des montagnes de Mieminger. La commune se compose de villages et hameaux dispersés sur ledit plateau. Au Holzleitensattel, situé à 1126 m à l'ouest, le plateau se transforme avec une grande dénivellation en Gurgltal. Le village principal d'Obsteig est facilement accessible par l'autoroute Inntal, sortie Mötz. D'autres noyaux habités dans la commune sont Wald, Thal, Finsterfiecht, Roller, Langgarten, Holzleiten, Weisland, Aschland, Arzkasten, Mooswald, Oberstrass, Unterstrass, Gschwent et Schloß Klamm.
