Le terme est utilisé par le Club Alpin Autrichien dans sa classification des Alpes orientales comme l'une des 24 sous-chaînes des Alpes calcaires du Nord.
Les deux sommets individuels de Grimming et Sarstein ont été comptés comme faisant partie de la chaîne de Dachstein car tous deux ont été détachés du bloc calcaire de Dachstein, même s'ils sont assez séparés d'un point de vue hydrographique et orographique. Cette classification est apparue dès 1924 dans la division Moriggl des Alpes.
