Le Kraenepoel, un étang de 22 ha entouré de forêts, est le dernier des dizaines d'étangs de campagne qui parsemaient, au Moyen Âge, le Bulskampveld, la vaste lande allant de Aalter à Bruges. Il est apparu à partir du 13ème siècle lorsque les habitants déterraient des pierres de champ ou extrayaient de la tourbe. Les trous restants servaient à l'élevage de poissons. Le nom ‘Kraenepoel’ fait référence à l'ancien nom néerlandais de la tourbe : kraene ou krane. Il est protégé en tant que zone naturelle dans le cadre de Natura 2000. Pendant les périodes de gel sévère, le Kraenepoel gèle parfois partiellement ou complètement et en raison de sa faible profondeur, c'est souvent le premier étang sur lequel on patine.
