Le Petit Béguinage – pas un peu plus grand qu'une seule rue – date du XIIIe siècle et a été fondé comme une communauté de vie pour les femmes qui souhaitaient vivre religieusement en dehors des murs d'un monastère. Elles demeuraient célibataires, mais ne faisaient pas de vœu éternel : le béguinage était une forme précoce d'autonomie pour les femmes qui sortaient de la bourgeoisie.
Après la Révolution française, l'église a perdu son emprise sur le site. Le CPAS a pris la gestion. Au tournant du siècle, le béguinage a été entièrement rénové. Une partie a été vendue comme logements privés, une partie est restée aux mains du CPAS en tant qu'offre de logement social. Cela représente aujourd'hui environ dix logements.
Le CPAS conserve dix logements sociaux dans un béguinage qui est en grande partie privatisé. Est-ce une victoire pour l'intérêt public, ou un maigre vestige d'un monde qui a disparu ?
