Lamoral, comte d’Egmont, est probablement le personnage le plus important de l’histoire de Zottegem. Il était seigneur de Zottegem et était l’un des plus grands propriétaires terriens féodaux à l’époque de l’empereur Charles. Sur ordre du duc d’Alva, le comte fut décapité en 1568 en raison de ses préoccupations concernant la liberté religieuse. Vous pouvez trouver sa statue sur le marché. Fait remarquable, il y a une statue identique à peine à 500 m. Un peu plus loin se trouve le château d’Egmontmont.
Sous l’église Notre-Dame de l’Assomption, sur la place du marché, se trouve la crypte d’Egmont, où sont conservés les restes et ceux de son épouse Sabine de Bavière.
