L’origine de Dikkebusvijver remonte à 1320, où sur ordre de Robert de Béthune, comte de Flandre, le (Kleine) Kemmelbeek a été endigué sur le côté nord. Les berges du ruisseau en amont du barrage ont également été creusées et la plaine inondable approfondie. Par des canaux et des tuyaux en chêne, l’eau de cet étang était acheminée vers les forteresses d’Ypres (Boterplas).
