Le 13 mai 1847, l’architecte de la ville François Drossaert rédige un dossier d’avant-projet pour la construction d’une nouvelle prison derrière le commissariat de la Grand-Place. Le 1er octobre 1848, le bâtiment est inauguré. Jusqu’en 1862, ils y purgeaient les peines de police. Après la restauration en 1978, il a été transformé en musée.
Après 20 ans, le musée a été rénové et considérablement agrandi. Non seulement l’espace d’exposition a été doublé, mais suffisamment d’espace a également été fourni pour conserver les expositions du musée dans des conditions optimales.
