Au printemps de 1909, Permeke retourna à Latem, chez ses amis de Latem, mais il y vivait de manière plus retirée et s'intéressait surtout à la touche lourde et pâteuse d'Albert Servaes, qu'il connaissait déjà de son temps à l'Académie de Gand ; ils échangèrent beaucoup, devinrent amis et peignirent ensemble à la campagne dans et autour de Latem. Servaes pouvait déjà être considéré comme le "Père de l'expressionnisme flamand".
