Gistel est surtout connu pour ses Flandriens : l'ancien cycliste Johan Museeuw, vainqueur notamment du Tour des Flandres, et Sylvère Maes, vainqueur notamment du Tour de France en 1936 et 1939.
Un événement important est la procession annuelle de Sainte-Godelieve, autour de la Sainte Godelieve de Gistel. Le couvent de château établi en son honneur, l'Abbaye Ten Putte, est l'un des lieux de pèlerinage les plus connus de la Flandre-Occidentale.
