Cette chapelle ronde avait à l’origine une fonction stratégique de tour de guet. C’est ce qui explique d’emblée les deux embrasures des façades. Au XVIIIe siècle, la tour est raccourcie et transformée en chapelle. Elle était populairement connue sous le nom de « Chapelle Blanche ».
La chapelle est dédiée à sainte Apollonie. Ce saint vivait au IIIe siècle. Elle a été persécutée par les païens parce qu’elle était chrétienne. Au cours de sa persécution, ses dents ont été arrachées. C’est pourquoi Apollonia est la sainte patronne des dentistes et pourquoi les gens venaient en pèlerinage contre les maux de dents.
