La Battelsluis est l'une des 5 écluses du canal Leuven-Dijle, également connu sous le nom de Vaart de Louvain. Le canal ne comptait à l'origine que deux écluses, ce qui a entraîné des inondations. Par la suite, cela a été porté à cinq écluses : Tildonk, Kampenhout-Sas, Boortmeerbeek, Battel et Zennegat. Entre 1836 et 1837, le canal a été adapté aux navires ayant un tirant d'eau allant jusqu'à 3,60 m et on a également reconstruit Kampenhout-sas. Le canal était important pour le transport de marchandises et de voyageurs, mais à partir de 1837, le transport de passagers a diminué lorsque la ligne de chemin de fer entre Louvain et Malines a été mise en service.
