Après l'accord migratoire belgo-italien de 1946, par lequel l'Italie a reçu du charbon belge en échange de la possibilité d'envoyer des travailleurs en Belgique, environ trente mille Italiens sont arrivés dans la région de Charleroi au pic de cette migration. Après la fermeture des mines de charbon wallonnes, on estime que seulement 20 % d'entre eux sont retournés dans leur pays d'origine.
