Tegernsee est à la fois le nom dun lac et dune petite ville denviron 4000 habitants. Tegernsee fut fondée en 756 par des moines bénédictins venus de Saint-Gall, en Suisse. Du XIe au XVIIIe siècle, labbaye revêtit une grande importance sur le plan culturel. En 1803, elle fut toutefois transformée en château et en manoir destiné aux personnes de sang royal. Certaines parties des bâtiments sont ouvertes au public, par exemple la salle du chapitre, qui fait également partie du musée local.
