Ce petit musée géré de manière privée donne une impression de la vie ordinaire sous le communisme. Une fois l'Allemagne réunifiée en 1990, la plupart des Allemands de l'Est ne pouvaient pas remplacer suffisamment vite leurs vieux meubles, leurs vêtements démodés et leurs biens ménagers obsolètes. Certains, cependant, ne pouvaient tout simplement pas se résoudre à jeter leurs souvenirs. Grâce à ces types nostalgiques, ce musée, le seul du pays à représenter la vie allemande quotidienne derrière le Rideau de Fer, a été fondé en 2006 sur la vague du phénomène Ostalgie.
