Selon la tradition, la forêt de Teutoburg a été le théâtre d’horribles batailles à l’époque romaine. En l’an 7 après J.-C., le général romain Varus fut envoyé dans la forêt de Teurobourg pour garder sous contrôle les tribus germaniques sous le commandement d’Arminius (Hemann). Mais Arminius a gagné et, il y a un an, il a reçu à titre posthume son propre sentier de randonnée, le Hermannsweg.
