Dornum est une commune en Ostfriesland et fait partie de l'arrondissement d'Aurich en Basse-Saxe. Elle est nommée d'après le chef-lieu du même nom. Avec 4457 habitants, c'est la plus petite commune unie sur le continent de l'arrondissement d'Aurich.
Le quartier de Nesse fait partie des plus anciennes colonies vikings en Ostfriesland et est daté du 9ème siècle. Tout comme à Emden, Groothusen et Grimersum, un commerce maritime y a également eu lieu à un stade précoce. Cependant, Nesse a perdu cette importance, tout comme Groothusen et Grimersum, en raison de l'ensablement du port et des endiguements. Dornum était une seigneurie du Moyen Âge tardif jusqu'à l'époque moderne, dernierement sous les barons de Closter.
